Krystyna E. Wisniewski, M.D., Ph.D.
It
is with sadness that in early June we learned of the death of
Dr.Krystyna Wisniewski. Dr Wisniewski worked for many years with
Batten disease both clinically and in research and was what we
considered to be an expert. She was based in Staten Island, New
York, USA, at the Institute for Basic research in Developmental
Disabilities and the research interests are listed as the molecular
mechanisms underlying mental retardation in Down syndrome, the
pathogenesis and potential treatment for Neuronal Ceroid
Lipofuscinosis, and the Infantile NCL treatment trial. But most
importantly to the Batten community and to the families in the USA
was her kind and caring manner when helping parents whose children
were going through difficult times and the follow up afterwards. She
helped so many families over the years to understand what was
happening and how best to care for their child. In addition she was
instrumental in bringing Batten disease to the attention of the
medical and scientific communities and travelled all over the world
lecturing and talking about Batten disease.
Dr
Krystyna Wisniewski was married to Dr Henry Wisniewski, who was an
eminent neuropathologist and had two children Thomas and the late
Alexander, who both became physicans. Our thoughts are with her son
Thomas and family, she will be missed .
